Regional Camping Overview

The Gunnison National Forest, one of the larger national forests in the lower 48, encompasses portions of Colorado's central Rockies and includes nearly 30 peaks above 13,000 feet.  Throughout the region, you'll find alpine and sub-alpine camping at it's finest.

You can hike over one hundred miles of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail within the national forest.  Plenty of summer backpacking and camping is available in just about every direction you look. Camping points of interest in the area include Curecanti National Recreation Area, Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. Blue Mesa is popular for RV camping.

Regional Camping Climate

Summer high temperatures consistently reach into the 70s and low 80s. The scene cools rapidly after dark, with temperatures often dropping into the 30s in the high country. Afternoon summer monsoons are common and it can snow at any time of year at higher elevations. Expect to camp at lower elevations until at least mid-July when the last of the snow pack departs.  Please use sunscreen and sun-protective clothing when visiting!

Bear Country

Black Bears emerge from hibernation in April and May. Hanging food and/or using bear proof containers are well-advised precautions. Remember: A fed bear is a dead bear.

Leave No Trace

We strongly support Leave No Trace camping ethics. The Gunnison Valley and Colorado Western Slope are wonderful, wild, and fragile ecosystems. Please pack out all materials you pack in, especially trash. Follow established trails when possible and do not remove any flora or fauna.  Always check with the Forest Service or BLM for the updated fire danger rating for the area you are camping in.
